FLORIDA KEYS — Beach-goers and boating enthusiasts can flock to the sparkling waters surrounding the Florida Keys during the annual Independence Day celebrations along the 110-mile chain of islands.

Throughout the Keys, beachside fun for families coincides with spectacular fireworks shows.

Blackwater Sound provides a mirror-like surface designed to make the annual fireworks display seem like a 3-D viewing experience from either land or sea. The show is to take place bayfront in Key Largo at 9 p.m. Monday, July 4. The best seating is at Sundowners and Señor Frijoles restaurants, the Caribbean Club and Marriott Key Largo Bay Resort, all located around mile marker (MM) 104 bayside. Reservations are suggested because seating fills up early. For more information, visit www.keylargofireworks.com.

The Upper Keys Reporter is to sponsor its 36th annual Fourth of July parade, this year themed "Flagler's Railroad to the Sea." The Reporter partners with the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce on the parade, which gets rolling at 10 a.m. from the parking lot at Anthony's Clothing Store, MM 98.2 on the center median of U.S. Highway 1 in Key Largo. Entrants must assemble in the parking lot between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Awards are to be presented to floats and entries in categories including best emergency vehicle, best musical, most original, most beautiful, best portrayal of this year's theme, best nonprofit and best business parade entrants. For more details, call the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce at 305-451-1414 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Before the lively procession, a "Stay Ahead Of The Parade" 5k Run is planned and open to the public. Sponsored by the Upper Keys Reporter, Upper Keys YMCA and Centennial Bank, the event is to benefit summer camp scholarships for junior marine biology and literacy initiatives. The race is expected to start at 9:45 a.m. Participants can pre-register at the YMCA office and Key Largo Community Park (MM 100), or choose 8-9 a.m. registration on race day. For more information, contact Joyia Montanez at 305-896-4956.

Independence Day at Islamorada's Holiday Isle, MM 84 oceanside, is expected to include live music at Kokomo and the Tiki Bar along with food, fun and frolicking. Revelers can plan for festivities to start at 2 p.m. and carry on into the night.

Founders Park, MM 87 on Plantation Key, is the site of "Spirit of Islamorada," an old-fashioned annual July 4 celebration hosted by the Village of Islamorada and the Upper Keys Rotary Club. Entertainment and activities for kids, teens, parents and dogs highlight the event from 6 to 9:30 p.m., with a fireworks show to follow. Planned activities include contests for best apple pie and potato salad, a "Nathans" hot dog eating contest and other food, refreshments and beer. Event proceeds benefit local scholarship funds, Boy Scouts and athletic programs.

All Islamorada residents and visitors are welcome to attend. Guests staying at participating resorts are to receive wristbands for free admission to the event at 6 p.m. A $10 admission fee applies for nonresidents not staying at a participating hotel. For more information, visit Spirit of Islamorada on Facebook.

In Marathon, a patriotic parade is slated to start at 10:30 a.m. at Marathon High School on Sombrero Beach Road (MM 50 oceanside) and proceed to Sombrero Beach where a picnic and celebration featuring food and drink, kids' crafts and entertainment lead into the night's fireworks display. Marathon is known as the Boating Destination of the Keys, and hundreds of boaters typically line up for front-row seats at the beach for the festivities and fireworks. For more information, call the Marathon Chamber of Commerce at 305-743-5417.

The Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary Club's annual July 4 fireworks are to take place at Sugarloaf Airport, MM 17 bayside on Sugarloaf Key, adjacent to the quirky Bat Tower. Live music headlined by Brian Roberts and the Prime Movers, food and ice-cold beverages are to be accompanied by games and activities for both adults and kids. A "longer and larger" fireworks show is set to begin at nightfall, or about 9 p.m. Admission is free but no coolers, pets or personal fireworks are to be allowed. Gates open at 5 p.m. For more information, call Cece at 305-766-8467.

Key West's 27th annual July 4 picnic is to take place on the grounds of the luxurious Casa Marina, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, located at 1500 Reynolds St. overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Benefiting Hospice of the Florida Keys and the Visiting Nurse Association, the popular celebration starts at 5 p.m. Fireworks over the Atlantic are slated for 9 p.m., courtesy of the Key West Rotary Club.

The traditional buffet offers hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings for $25 per adult, $10 per child ages 3-12 and free for children younger than 3. General admission (no meal) tickets are $10. For an elegant alternative, attendees can choose reserved beachfront seats with first-class service and a lavish buffet for $100 per person. Free watermelon, popcorn and cold drinks, live music, a silent auction and lots of children's games round out the fun-filled family festivities. Hi Steve and Tammi, My husband and I would like to say that our stay was awesome. We really enjoyed ourselves. Being close to the Dolphin Research Center (DRC) where our daughter was staying made it all that much better. Whether we were swimming in the pool or fishing off the jetty it was very relaxing and peaceful. The room was very spacious and clean. It is very nice to have everything included in the stay. We both look forward to another stay next year. We recommend the Dolphins Motel to everyone. Steve and Tammi thank you again for an enjoyable stay and look forward to next year and maybe longer than a week!!! Eric and Jennifer Thompson of Orlando!

We just wanted to send you a short note to let you know that we all had a wonderful 10 day vacation at the Dolphin Motel. All 3 rooms were fully equipped with everything we needed to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The pool, boat basin, fish cleaning area and the jetty were all fantastic. The children and the adults for that matter, really enjoyed fishing and catching a variety of fish on the jetty. I would recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a few days or an extended stay getaway to go to the Dolphin Motel on Grassy Key.

Until we can do it again,

Thank You,

The Vaughn's

Dolphins Motel is the place to stay at when down in the Florida Keys! I had the amazing opportunity this summer to intern as a Marine Mammal Trainer at The Dolphin Connection at Hawks Cay Resort. The Dolphins Motel was only 5 minutes from my internship and for those interested in interning at The Dolphin Research Center; well you need only to cross the street to get there! Each studio apartment has its unique island décor and offers the convenience of wireless internet, full kitchen (plus an outside grill!), sofa-bed for guests, and more! What sold me was, without the doubt, being just footsteps away from the ocean. Almost as amazing as working with Bottlenose Dolphins everyday was coming home from my internship and snorkeling right by the jetty with my intern friend. At night one could go out and watch the red-orange moon rise up. For all you animal lovers, I have seen Juvenile Nurse Sharks, Atlantic Sting Rays, Annulated Seahare, Horseshoe Crabs, Great White  Herons, Ospreys, and much more! If the ocean is not for you, don’t fret because Dolphins Motel also offers a wonderful pool that is perfect for relaxing in the sun.  However, what makes Dolphins Motel stand out the most was having such amazing landlords. There always available for any questions or concerns; extremely approachable individuals and are honestly wanting to provide their customers with the best Keys experience.  Not only were they my landlords but they eventually became friends. Tami and Steve represent what the Keys is all about: making friends, having fun, and just living life :O) If you find yourself wanting to escape, to enjoy island life, good people, good food, all around good, make sure to stay at the Dolphins Motel!

I was Thrilled and sad to hear that Steve and Tammy started a web-site. Their motel units have been "MY HIDDEN SECRET" for the past 4 years now! My husband and I enjoy the old Florida Charm of the motel along with the jetty and great pool. It is close enough to town for all our shopping..and a 1 hour drive to Key West. We are very delighted to be apart of the testimonial( as long as you still have an opening for us!!) :O).

Best Wishes...May R Haysville,N.C.

Steve & Tami run the best value in vacation rentals in the Florida Keys. I just spent three weeks at the Dolphins Motel in Grassy Key; one of the "Islands of Marathon" the heart of the keys at mile marker 59. This place is so peaceful and serene, it is a fantastic getaway. Easy access to everything the Florida Keys has to offer. If I wasn't fishing, snorkeling, or at the beach; I was partying on Duval street in Key West, or eating at one of the many excellent restaurants close by like Sparky's Landing or Cabana Breezes. Be sure to try the highly recomended service called "Try Charter Fishing" if you want some real thrill fishing and like to catch the big fish. Some days I just logged into work from the comfort of the efficiency at the Dolphins Motel via there free high speed wireless Internet connection to Comcast cable, it was as if I was sitting at my desk in Connecticut. This is my second year staying at the Dolphins Motel, and it will not be my last. I hope to get back during lobster season this year, Steve; the owner says he knows all the hot-spots for finding the keeper lobsters and he is a great fisherman and willing to take guests out on his boat if he is going fishing or lobster diving. Steve and Tami, Thanks so much for running such a clean and wonderful vacation rental in the heart of the keys at the best pricing I have ever seen anywhere on the keys. See you again soon.

Your guest and friend Michael
